Professor Chaim Lotan, Director of the Heart Institute at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, Jerusalem, and a key developer of the BioDesign Innovation course at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will speak about BioDesign Innovation and its power to create new solutions for unmet medical needs.

Dr Lotan’s presentation is open to all members of the University of Melbourne community, and should be of interest to anyone interested in innovation or entrepreneurship. It will be of particular interest to MBS part-time students who may be interested in the MBS BioDesign Innovation elective in 2018.

The lecture is free and will include time for questions and discussion. It will be held on Thursday 6 April 2016 in the BTR Nylex theatre at Melbourne Business School (200 Leicester Street), from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, followed by refreshments.

The BioDesign Innovation elective at MBS offers an opportunity for students to explore the medical innovation area within a multi-disciplinary team, comprised of MBA students, postgraduate engineering students, and medical clinicians. BioDesign Innovation is modelled after similar, highly successful programs at Stanford University and Hebrew University.

BioDesign Innovation is a “real world”, team-based subject focused on creating successful medical devices. The main outcomes of the subject are to identify a medical innovation that has the potential to be a successful product or service, to build a prototype, and to develop a business model for commercialisation.

Two teams from the inaugural MBS class in 2016 participated in MedTech’s Got Talent, an entrepreneurship competition, and won funding and mentoring to pursue their products beyond the subject.

BioDesign Innovation is taught over Terms 1, 2 and 3 and counts for three MBS elective subjects; the subject is also open to students who have fewer than three electives remaining. Participants will gain academic training and practical skills useful to entrepreneurs and executives alike.
