Karen Knowles (SEMBA 2016) is a senior business leader, intrapreneur and startup-er who has worked across a range of industries including digital marketplaces, clean energy, capital and equity markets and impact investing, in the US, Canada, England and Australia.
Her first foray into startups was as an investor and Employee #3 in a Vancouver-based waste-to-energy process, a textbook example of commercialising research from a university chemistry lab to full scale operation. Closer to home, Karen was on the advisory team hired by Melbourne-based Redbubble to help it scale and successfully IPO in 2016.
More recently Karen worked with The Difference Incubator (TDi) which helps enterprises build “blended value” business models: doing good and making money. Having worked with over 30 enterprises in Australia and the South Pacific, Karen’s will present “Business Model Canvas: Outside-in Thinking”.
With 20 years’ freight and logistics experience, Marshall had a prediction.
He believed “The time will come when you are wandering around the shopping centre and you’ll get a message on your phone saying “Hey Marshall, Mrs Jones, who lives around the corner from you, has just bought a baby blanket from Purebaby. If you deliver it on your way home, we’ll pay you $10”.
A few years later, when this had still not happened, Marshall quit his job to turn his prediction into reality.
Passel (www.passel.com.au), is a crowdsourced delivery service utilising a combination of location-awareness and artificial intelligence to provide inexpensive, convenient and delightful on-demand deliveries for retailers.
